Social Security Disability Claim Form - Cardinal Law PartnersStep four of the five-step sequential evaluation process in the Social Security Disability determination involves an examination of your maximum work capability. This benchmark takes into consideration any physical and mental impediments you may have.

Step four of the five-step sequential evaluation process is where the Social Security Administration focuses on developing your residual functional capacity (RFC). This helps the Social Security Administration determine whether the capacity you appear to have allows you to return to your past relevant work. Understanding what residual functional capacity actually entails is crucial in order for us to proceed.

Residual functional capacity refers to the maximum amount of work you can perform based on your impairments and resulting limitations. Once it’s established that you have at least one severe impairment, the Social Security Administration includes all limitations from both severe and non-severe impairments. This assessment encompasses both physical and mental limitations, providing a fair snapshot of your capabilities. The evaluation uses the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, a reference dating back to the 1980s, which categorizes work capabilities, such as sedentary, light, medium, and heavy work.

Mental limitations, including the ability to learn, interact with others, or maintain regular attendance due to mental health issues, are also used as part of the residual functional capacity assessment. This process aims to accurately outline your physical and mental abilities while attempting full-time work.

Once the Social Security Administration or administrative law judge determines an RFC they deem accurate, the focus shifts to whether this capacity aligns with the requirements of your past relevant work. Past relevant work encompasses all jobs you’ve held in the 15 years leading up to your application. For instance, if you worked as a truck driver during this period, the evaluation examines the job requirements for a truck driver.

Suppose the job of a truck driver involves regularly lifting 50 pounds, but your residual functional capacity only allows for lifting 20 pounds regularly. In that case, the Social Security Administration or judge would conclude that a person with your residual functional capacity could not perform the work of a truck driver as typically performed in the national economy. If it is determined you can no longer perform your past relevant work, the evaluation progresses to the fifth step, addressing whether you are still considered disabled.
